A tragic explosion in Bristol has reportedly left two people dead after a man allegedly killed his ex-partner and himself using a grenade.
Police responded to a “domestic-related” call on Sunday, May 3, at a residence on Sterncourt Road. Moments before officers arrived, an explosion occurred at around 6:30 a.m.
A bomb disposal unit was sent to the scene. Authorities have confirmed the incident is not being treated as terrorism-related, according to reports.
Three other individuals—believed to be the woman’s son and two family members—were injured and taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Later that day, police searched another property about three miles away in Speedwell connected to the man involved.
Neighbours claimed the woman had recently moved into the house to escape her ex-partner.
A local resident, Wayne Smith, said:
“At first, when I heard the boom, I thought it was a gas explosion or even a huge car crash. I could feel the whole house shake.”
Superintendent Matt Ebbs stated that police received the call at about 6:17 a.m. Officers were dispatched, but the explosion occurred shortly before they arrived.
He confirmed: A man and a woman died at the scene
The explosion is being treated as suspicious. Families have been informed and are receiving support
Three others (a man, woman, and child) were hospitalized with minor injuries
Around 70 residents were evacuated from nearby homes and taken to a local pub being used as a temporary rest center.
One neighbour described hearing a “loud bang” and seeing multiple emergency vehicles, including unmarked police cars and ambulances, before being instructed by armed officers to return indoors.
This incident remains under active investigation.
