OPay has commenced legal action against individuals accused of circulating a fake announcement claiming the fintech company would shut down operations in Nigeria from September 1, 2026.
The company said it had also alerted relevant regulatory and security agencies, stressing that its services remain fully operational and that it has no plans to leave the Nigerian market.
OPay’s Chief Technology Officer, Dotun Daniel Adekunle, described the shutdown message as false and urged customers to rely on credible channels before acting on information shared on social media.
“OPay is here, OPay is operating, and OPay is going nowhere,” Adekunle said.
He added that the company had continued expanding its operations, opening more than 26 new offices across Nigeria this year.
OPay’s Chief Legal Counsel, Akinfolabi Rokosu, said the company had submitted evidence to the DSS and Police, who are investigating the matter.
According to Rokosu, the fake announcement was designed to appear as an official OPay communication and could cause panic, financial losses and damage to public confidence.
He said OPay would pursue legal action against those responsible, insisting that social media does not provide immunity for unlawful conduct or deliberate attempts to cause financial harm.
