Manchester City have appointed Ruben Dias as their new captain, with Erling Haaland, Marc Guehi and Gianluigi Donnarumma joining the club’s leadership group.

Dias succeeds Bernardo Silva, who departed the club during the summer. The Portugal defender will wear the armband as City begin a new era under manager Enzo Maresca.

Maresca confirmed the leadership structure on September 4, highlighting the four players’ experience and influence within the squad.

The manager also praised Enzo Fernandez, following the midfielder’s reported £125 million move from Chelsea to City on deadline day. Maresca said City players were eager for Fernandez to join because of his winning mentality and experience of major competitions.

“He is a winner, a winner’s mentality and knows how to win [after] the World Cup, Club World Cup,” Maresca said.

Fernandez could make his City debut against newly promoted Coventry City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, as City continue their record £458 million summer spending spree.
