Veteran Kannywood actress, Zainab Zee Diamond, has died following a prolonged illness, her family has announced.
The Hausa film actress reportedly died in the early hours of Monday, September 7, 2026, shortly after the Fajr prayer.
Her family confirmed her death in a statement, expressing gratitude to those who supported and stood by the actress throughout her period of illness.
“Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un,” the family said, an Islamic expression meaning, “To Allah we belong, and to Him shall we return.”
According to the family, Diamond had been receiving medical treatment for an extended period before her death. However, details about the nature of her illness were not disclosed.
The family also appreciated everyone who offered prayers, support and encouragement during her treatment, adding that further information concerning her funeral arrangements would be communicated in due course.
Following news of her passing, colleagues, filmmakers, actors and fans took to social media to mourn the actress and celebrate her contributions to the Hausa-language film industry.
Members of the Kannywood community described Diamond as a familiar and respected figure whose years in the entertainment industry left a mark on northern Nigerian cinema.
Kannywood, the northern Nigerian film industry centred largely in Kano, is renowned for producing predominantly Hausa-language films and has produced numerous actors and filmmakers who have gained recognition across Nigeria and beyond.
The death of Zainab Zee Diamond has therefore been met with an outpouring of grief from colleagues and fans who continue to remember her work and legacy.
