Manchester City midfielder Enzo Fernández has hailed Erling Haaland after the pair combined to inspire a 2–0 victory over Porto in the UEFA Champions League.
Fernández provided the assist for Haaland’s opening goal in the 47th minute at the Estádio do Dragão, before the Norwegian striker found the net again to complete his brace and secure an impressive away win for City.
Speaking to Prime Video Sport UK after the match, Fernández described Haaland as an “animal” and a “beast,” while revealing that he will always look for the striker whenever they are on the pitch together.
“Haaland is an animal, a beast. Every time I’m on the pitch, I will look for him. Hopefully I can give him more assists.”
Fernández also praised Haaland beyond his performances on the pitch, describing him as an exceptional person who helped him settle into life at Manchester City.
“Haaland is not just a great player but an amazing human being as well, and he welcomed me here and has helped me.”
The Argentine midfielder expressed his delight at making his Champions League debut for City following his move from Chelsea, praising his new teammates and the club’s supporters for making him feel at home.
“I’m so happy; they welcomed me from the first minute when I walked into the door. Not just brilliant players, but they’re amazing human beings, and they’ve all been so kind to me.
“The fans have been absolutely brilliant, and it is a new step in my career. I’m so excited to get going.”
The match marked Fernández’s first Champions League appearance for Manchester City since completing his move from Chelsea.
Meanwhile, Haaland continued his extraordinary scoring record in Europe’s premier club competition. His two goals against Porto took his Champions League tally to 59 goals in 59 appearances, moving him into seventh place on the competition’s all-time scoring chart.
With Fernández already establishing a strong connection with Haaland, Manchester City supporters will be hoping Wednesday night’s combination is the beginning of a prolific partnership.
