Obi Emerges NDC’s Sole Presidential Aspirant

ABUJA — The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has concluded the sale of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for its 2027 presidential election ticket, with indications that former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is the only aspirant to have purchased the forms.

The party, however, announced a one-week extension for the collection of Expression of Interest Forms for other elective offices, including governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and State Houses of Assembly positions.

Party sources disclosed that at the close of the presidential form sales, Obi remained the sole aspirant in the race. The former Anambra State governor recently joined the NDC from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In a statement issued by the NDC National Secretary, Mr. Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, the deadline for collecting Expression of Interest Forms for non-presidential positions was extended from 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, 2026, to 12 midnight on Sunday, May 24, 2026.

The statement clarified that the extension applies only to aspirants contesting State Assembly, House of Representatives, Senate, and Governorship seats, while the sale of presidential forms has officially closed.

According to the party’s timetable, screening of aspirants who have purchased and completed their forms will begin on Tuesday, May 19, and conclude on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. Collection and submission of Nomination Forms for cleared aspirants will run from May 20 to May 26, 2026.

The NDC warned that no further extension would be granted and urged all aspirants to comply strictly with the party’s guidelines and timelines.

Aspirants were also directed to appear for screening and pre-qualification interviews at designated venues nationwide with relevant documents, including educational certificates, birth certificates or declarations of age, passport photographs, voter’s cards, NDC membership cards, and curriculum vitae. All documents submitted to the Screening Committee must be provided in six copies.

The party stated that aspirants would be evaluated based on public acceptability, local considerations, competence, capacity, and character. The Screening Committee was also instructed to consider the party’s affirmative action policy for women, youths, and persons living with disabilities.

The NDC further encouraged aspirants to embrace consensus-building, noting that only candidates cleared through the screening process would be eligible to obtain nomination forms.

With the latest development, Obi is widely expected to emerge as the NDC’s consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
