GOV OKPEBHOLO LEADS RESCUE OF TRAFFICKED EDO INDIGENES FROM BURKINA FASO
Edo Government Secures Freedom of Three Victims
The Edo State Government, through its Migration Agency, has successfully rescued three trafficked Nigerians from Burkina Faso, reinforcing its commitment to protecting vulnerable citizens and combating human trafficking.
Victims Received at Benin Airport
The rescued victims—two women and one man—were received at Benin Airport by the Director General of the agency, Lucky Agazuma. He noted that the operation reflects the proactive leadership and humanitarian approach of Governor Monday Okpebholo.
Victims Suffered Severe Abuse
One of the victims, Precious, reportedly lost her sight during the ordeal, while another, Peace, endured physical assault. The male victim, Evans Enwata, also faced harsh and inhumane conditions before being rescued.
Government Promises Rehabilitation and Reintegration
Agazuma assured that the state has put in place strong measures not only for rescue operations but also for the rehabilitation and reintegration of victims into society.
Okpebholo’s Commitment to Human Welfare Highlighted
He emphasized that Governor Okpebholo has consistently shown compassion and dedication to human development, making the empowerment of returnees a key priority of his administration.
“This rescue clearly demonstrates the governor’s commitment to the welfare and dignity of Edo people, wherever they may be,” he said.
Crackdown on Human Trafficking Intensifies
The agency disclosed that efforts to dismantle human trafficking networks have been strengthened, with several arrests already made. Agazuma warned traffickers to desist or face strict legal consequences.
Support from First Lady’s Office Acknowledged
He also appreciated the support of the Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, Edesili Anani Okpebholo, for her dedication to humanitarian efforts and the agency’s mission.
Victim Shares Experience, Warns Youths
Speaking on behalf of the victims, Evans Enwata expressed gratitude to the Edo State Government for their rescue and urged young people to avoid irregular migration.
“What we went through is not something anyone should experience. There is nothing there but suffering,” he said.
Renewed Commitment to Fight Human Trafficking
This latest rescue underscores the Edo State Government’s sustained efforts under Governor Okpebholo to combat human trafficking, protect its citizens, and provide meaningful support for victims of exploitation.
