The Primate of The First African Church Mission, His Eminence, The Most Revd. Dr. Sunday Matilukuro, has attributed the church’s smooth leadership transitions to transparency, prayer, and strict adherence to its constitution.
Speaking at a press conference at Christ Church Cathedral, Ebute-Metta, Lagos, Matilukuro announced his retirement as Primate in September and unveiled a series of retirement activities, including the dedication of the Primate Palace/Bishop Jones Theological Institute on August 4, The Prayer City on August 13, a retirement lecture on September 26, and a Change of Baton/Thanksgiving Service on September 27.
He explained that the selection of a new Primate is conducted strictly according to the church’s constitution, with qualified bishops screened and elected by the College of Bishops based on merit, experience, and spiritual suitability—not personal influence or endorsements.
“I do not know who will emerge as the next Primate, and I cannot ask bishops to vote for anyone,” he said, emphasizing that the process is guided by prayer and God’s direction.
Matilukuro likened the church’s leadership election to the Roman Catholic Church’s papal selection process and urged the Christian community to continue speaking truth to political leaders while remaining faithful to its spiritual mission.
