KANO — Sani Muhammad Hotoro, popularly known as Dan Sani, a former Senior Special Assistant to Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on Cooperative Groups, has reportedly died in a fatal road accident.
Dan Sani was said to have been crushed to death by a trailer alongside one of his workers on Thursday at the Hotoro Eastern Bypass, near Gade-Gade Filling Station in Kano.
According to reports, the former government aide died at the scene of the accident.
A commercial tricycle operator who spoke about the incident said he arrived at the scene shortly after the crash and saw two people trapped beneath the trailer.
“I went to look, I saw two people under the tyres. Parts of their bodies were already out. I couldn’t tell which part,” the witness reportedly said.
The situation reportedly became tense following the accident, as youths in the area allegedly gathered at the scene and demanded access to the trailer, with some reportedly armed with weapons and threatening to set the vehicle ablaze.
The witness said the police later arrived at the scene and took control of the situation in an effort to prevent further escalation and restore calm.
As of the time of filing this report, there had been no official confirmation of Dan Sani’s death from his family, the Kano State Police Command or the Kano State Government.
Dan Sani was known to have been associated with the Kano State Government, having served as Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s Senior Special Assistant on Cooperative Groups.
Governor Yusuf Backs State Police
The reported death comes amid renewed discussions on security in Kano State, with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf expressing the state government’s readiness to establish a state police force.
Yusuf said the proposed state police system would be an important step towards strengthening security and protecting lives and property across the state.
The governor made the remarks during the inauguration of the Inter-Agencies Task Force on Drug Abuse and Trafficking at the Ante Chamber of the Government House in Kano.
His position was contained in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
According to the governor, the proposed state police would work alongside the Nigeria Police Force rather than compete with it.
He explained that both security structures would share responsibility for protecting residents, maintaining law and order and enhancing security across the state.
