The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, Edo State Chapter, led by its Chairperson, Habiba Sam, partnered with the Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development to commemorate the International Women’s Day 2026 celebration at the New Festival Hall Government House.
The event brought together government officials, civil society organisations, media practitioners, women’s rights advocates and members of the public to celebrate the achievements of women while renewing calls for stronger actions to advance gender equality in the state and across Nigeria.

Members of NAWOJ were well represented at the gathering, underscoring the role of the media in promoting issues affecting women and girls and holding institutions accountable for commitments toward gender equality.
The 2026 celebration was held under the theme “Rights. Justice. Action for All Women and Girls.” Speakers at the event emphasised the need to ensure that women and girls have equal access to opportunities, legal protection and social support systems that allow them to thrive.
Participants also reflected on the progress women have made in sectors such as governance, education, business and community leadership, while acknowledging the persistent barriers that continue to limit their full participation in society.
Stakeholders used the occasion to encourage women and girls to remain determined in pursuing education, leadership roles and economic opportunities despite existing challenges. They also called on government agencies, traditional institutions, religious leaders and civil society groups to take concrete steps to address cultural and systemic inequalities affecting women.

Beyond the Government House event, the NAWOJ Edo State Chapter further marked the celebration through a humanitarian outreach to the Catholic Home for the Elderly operated by St Paul Catholic Church along Airport Road in Benin City.
The visit, held on March 13, 2026, was organised under the International Women’s Day outreach theme “Give to Gain.”During the visit, NAWOJ members presented gifts to elderly residents and spent time interacting with them in a gesture of compassion and solidarity.
The association said the initiative reflects its commitment not only to media advocacy but also to community service and humanitarian support, particularly for vulnerable members of society.
Residents of the facility warmly received the delegation, with the interaction highlighting the importance of community support and human connection in promoting dignity and well-being among the elderly.

The NAWOJ Edo State Chapter expressed appreciation to the management and staff of the home for their dedication to caring for the residents and reaffirmed its commitment to continuing outreach programmes that positively impact communities across the state.
Through initiatives like this, the association noted that the work of women journalists extends beyond the newsroom, encompassing advocacy, service and the pursuit of a more inclusive and equitable society.
