Trump to Open 80th UN General Assembly in New York

U.S. President Donald Trump will deliver the opening address at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly’s annual General Debate on Tuesday in New York.

He will be joined on the first day’s agenda by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and French President Emmanuel Macron. The speeches are set to begin at 9 a.m. (1300 GMT).

UN Secretary-General António Guterres and General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock are also scheduled to speak. A high-level UN Security Council session on the war in Ukraine, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expected in attendance, will follow.

Over the course of the week, around 150 heads of state and government will address pressing global issues, including the Middle East conflict, the war in Ukraine, and the UN’s precarious financial situation. The shifting geopolitical role of the United States under Trump is also expected to feature prominently.

Nigeria’s Vice-President, Sen. Kashim Shettima, who is representing President Bola Tinubu, has already arrived in New York to lead the country’s delegation at the gathering.
