Grammy Award-winning artist Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has opened up about his early journey into music, revealing that he recorded his very first song at just 13 years old using a tape recorder, a radio, and beats from popular video games.
In a recent interview with Apple Music’s Ebro Darden, the Nigerian superstar shared how his passion for music began with limited resources. He explained that he used background soundtracks from games like NBA Street Vol. II and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas to create beats for his debut track.
“The first song I ever recorded was by myself,” Burna Boy recalled. “I had a tape, a radio, and a recorder. I used the beats from video games like NBA Street and GTA: San Andreas to record over. I think I was around 13 at the time.”
Now 34, the ‘African Giant’ has become one of the most influential figures in global music, especially in the Afrobeats scene. During the interview, he also revisited a past controversy in which he was criticized for saying Afrobeats lacked depth, a comment that sparked mixed reactions within the music community.
