Nigeria and India have submitted formal proposals to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with Abuja and Ahmedabad respectively put forward as candidate cities.
Nigeria is backing its capital, Abuja, for the hosting rights, while India has selected Ahmedabad as its proposed host city.
The future of the Commonwealth Games had come under scrutiny following the withdrawals of South Africa’s Durban and Australia’s Victoria as hosts of the 2022 and 2026 editions respectively.
Following Durban’s withdrawal, Birmingham stepped in to host the 2022 Games, while Glasgow took over the 2026 edition.
The 2030 bid represents Nigeria’s second attempt to host the Commonwealth Games. Abuja previously bid for the 2014 edition but lost to Glasgow.
No African city has ever hosted the Commonwealth Games.
India, meanwhile, previously hosted the Games in 2010 and is viewing the 2030 edition as a potential test ahead of a possible bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games.
