Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has condemned the reported attack and blockade of the convoy of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi during his visit to Benue State.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by his campaign spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo, Atiku described the incident as “unacceptable, anti-democratic and deeply shameful.”
Atiku called on the government and security agencies to urgently investigate the incident, identify those responsible and ensure that they are brought to justice.
He also stressed the importance of protecting political leaders and allowing them to carry out their legitimate activities without intimidation.
The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday when suspected thugs allegedly barricaded a road along Boko Road, near the Nigerian Air Force Base, preventing Obi’s convoy from proceeding.
Obi’s media aide, Esther Umoh, raised the alarm on X and shared a video purportedly showing the obstruction.
Obi was reportedly in Benue State to visit and sympathise with families affected by the persistent attacks in Yelwata.
The development has drawn attention to concerns over political freedom, security and the safety of political leaders ahead of Nigeria’s next electoral cycle.
