The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned of thunderstorms and rainfall across several parts of the country from Wednesday to Friday, September 9–11, 2026.
In its weather outlook released in Abuja on Tuesday, the agency predicted varying levels of thunderstorms and rainfall across the northern, North-Central and southern regions during the three-day period.
Wednesday
In the northern region, parts of Taraba and Kebbi states are expected to experience morning thunderstorms and light rains.
Later in the afternoon or evening, isolated thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains are expected over parts of Taraba, Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Sokoto, Katsina, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kano and Kaduna states.
For the North-Central region, morning thunderstorms and light rains are expected over parts of Nasarawa, Niger, Benue and the Federal Capital Territory. Most parts of the region could experience moderate rainfall later in the day.
In the southern region, NiMet forecast a cloudy atmosphere with chances of morning rains over parts of Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Oyo, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Cross River, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi and Akwa Ibom states.
Moderate rains are expected over most parts of the southern region later in the day.
Thursday
NiMet forecast patches of clouds across the northern region, with morning thunderstorms and light rains expected over parts of Jigawa, Kano, Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe and Kaduna states.
Later in the afternoon or evening, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa and Taraba states.
Across the North-Central region, sunny skies with patches of clouds are expected, alongside possible morning thunderstorms and light rains over parts of the FCT, Nasarawa, Plateau, Niger and Benue states. Moderate thunderstorms are expected across the region later in the day.
The southern region could experience light morning rains over parts of Ondo, Ogun, Abia, Imo, Enugu, Ebonyi, Lagos, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states, with continuous rains expected across most areas later in the day.
NiMet also warned of a high possibility of flooding in parts of Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states during the forecast period.
Friday
On Friday, partly cloudy skies are expected across the northern region, with chances of morning thunderstorms and moderate rains over Taraba and Adamawa states.
During the afternoon or evening, thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains are expected across Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Jigawa, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Adamawa and Taraba states.
In the North-Central region, sunny skies with patches of clouds are expected, with possible morning thunderstorms and light rains over parts of the FCT, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa and Niger states. Most parts of the region could experience moderate thunderstorms later in the day.
The southern region is expected to remain cloudy, with moderate morning rains possible over parts of Ondo, Ebonyi, Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states. Moderate rains are also expected across most parts of the region later in the day.
NiMet Issues Safety Advisory
NiMet warned that strong winds may precede thunderstorms in areas expected to experience severe weather conditions.
The agency urged residents to secure loose objects that could be blown away by strong winds and cause damage.
It also advised residents in areas at risk of flash floods to activate emergency response systems immediately.
Other safety measures advised by NiMet include:
- Avoid driving during heavy rainfall where possible.
- Disconnect electrical appliances from power sockets during thunderstorms.
- Stay away from tall trees to avoid falling branches and trees.
- Stay updated through official weather reports from NiMet.
- Airline operators should obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet to support effective flight planning.
NiMet urged members of the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as thunderstorms and heavy rainfall affect different parts of the country over the next three days.
