The National Inland Waterways Authority has stepped up efforts to prevent boat accidents and curb pollution as rising water levels and heightened environmental risks accompany the peak of the rainy season.
NIWA’s Abuja Area/Liaison Office commenced a Marine Safety and Environmental Protection Campaign in Abaji Area Council, Abuja, on Wednesday, urging waterfront communities to embrace safe navigation practices and protect the waterways.
The agency said the campaign was aimed at safeguarding lives, livelihoods and the environment, while enforcing federal regulations governing inland water transportation.
Speaking during the exercise, Abuja Area Manager, Aisha Eri, commended the host communities for their cooperation and pledged NIWA’s continued commitment to protecting the nation’s inland waterways and those who depend on them.
The Emir of Kwali, Alhaji Adamu Aguma, hailed the initiative and pledged the community’s support for efforts to protect the waterways and ensure strict compliance with safety regulations.
Other district heads at the event also welcomed the campaign and assured NIWA of their commitment to implementing the safety measures highlighted.
The sensitisation exercise followed a nationwide directive by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, mandating regular engagement with littoral communities on marine safety and environmental protection.
The Acting Managing Director of NIWA, Alhaji Umar Girei, has consequently directed all Area Offices to treat the directive as a priority.
NIWA said the Abuja Area Office would extend the campaign to more waterfront communities within and around the Federal Capital Territory next week.
