D’Tigers assistant captain Michael Eric has reaffirmed his commitment to grassroots basketball development after hosting a Top 50 Elite Basketball Camp in Lagos, where the impressive turnout and quality of young talent left organisers encouraged.
The one-day camp, organised through the Erico Sports Legacy Foundation—a non-profit established in memory of his late father, former Super Eagles goalkeeper and assistant coach Joe Erico—brought together 50 young players and coaches from basketball academies across Nigeria.
Born and raised in Mushin, Lagos, Eric said the enthusiasm and determination displayed by the participants strengthened his resolve to continue creating opportunities for talented youths.
“Seeing these kids show up prepared and eager to learn, seeing the hunger in their eyes—it gives you goosebumps, and that is exactly the goal,” Eric said.
He revealed that the foundation was inspired by his late father’s lifelong commitment to giving back to society.
“He always told me it is not about you. You are here for a reason, and you must use your gift to give. I have taken that message very deeply. It is no longer just about me. I have lived the life I could live and enjoyed what basketball has given me, but I have to come back home and make sure something meaningful is done,” he added.
Participants underwent intensive drills and training sessions, while the foundation also provided basketball shoes, jerseys, and other equipment. The standout two or three players will be considered for sponsorship opportunities or trials with basketball clubs in Europe.
Programme Director of the foundation, Gbenga Jetawo, described the camp as a major success, noting that the initiative has impacted more than 1,000 children over the past five years through funding provided solely by Eric.
Head coach Chris Nomigo also praised the commitment and energy of the young athletes, stressing that the foundation would continue mentoring participants beyond the camp.
Eric, who was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2013 NBA Draft, stressed that education remains a key pillar of the foundation’s mission.
“Basketball is just a tool to improve your life. When you are educated, you can walk into any room with confidence and create opportunities for yourself far beyond sport.”
He also applauded other Nigerian basketball professionals for launching similar grassroots initiatives, describing the growing movement as a positive step toward transforming basketball development in the country.
The Erico Sports Legacy Foundation said its long-term vision is to establish a world-class basketball academy in Nigeria with international affiliations, attract sponsorship partners, and continue supporting young talents through education and sport.
