Okonkwo Eyes Super Eagles Debut After FIFA Clearance

New Nigeria goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has expressed excitement over the possibility of making his Super Eagles debut following FIFA’s approval of his international switch from England.

The 24-year-old, born in Camden to Nigerian parents, is expected to be considered for selection ahead of the upcoming Unity Cup and next month’s international friendlies against Portugal and Poland.

Okonkwo previously represented England at youth level, including the U-18 side, during his time at Arsenal F.C.. Reports indicate that his decision to commit to Nigeria came after talks with Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle in London during the 2025 Unity Cup tournament, which Nigeria won.

Speaking in a video released by the Nigeria Football Federation, the Wrexham goalkeeper described the opportunity as a dream come true.

“It’s an honour being given the opportunity to play for your country. I am so excited, I can’t wait. To finally have the opportunity is incredible,” Okonkwo said.

Okonkwo joins a growing list of goalkeepers competing for places in the Super Eagles squad, including Stanley Nwabali, Francis Uzoho, Maduka Okoye, Amas Obasogie and teenage prospect Ebenezer Harcourt.

After progressing through Arsenal’s academy, Okonkwo had loan spells at Crewe Alexandra and Sturm Graz before joining Wrexham A.F.C. on loan in 2023. The move became permanent a year later, and he has since established himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

The shot-stopper has made 121 appearances for Wrexham, helping the club secure two promotions. This season, he featured in 44 matches across all competitions, keeping 10 clean sheets as the club narrowly missed out on Premier League promotion.
