Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman was unable to find the net as Atlético Madrid and Arsenal played out a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final at the Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday.
Appearing in back-to-back semi-finals for the first time in their history, Arsenal entered the clash knowing the importance of a solid start. Atlético Madrid had been unbeaten in their last six UCL knockout matches against English opposition, underlining the challenge ahead for Mikel Arteta’s side.
The hosts threatened first, with Julián Alvarez forcing a sharp save from David Raya. Arsenal responded swiftly as captain Martin Ødegaard saw his effort blocked, while Noni Madueke fired narrowly wide from distance.
Arsenal’s growing dominance paid off just before halftime when Dávid Hancko fouled Viktor Gyökeres in the penalty area. Gyökeres converted confidently from the spot, beating Jan Oblak to hand the visitors a crucial lead at the break.
Atlético came out with intent in the second half. Lookman saw a close-range effort denied by Raya before the hosts were awarded a penalty after a handball by Ben White. Alvarez stepped up and calmly equalised, restoring parity for Diego Simeone’s men.
Momentum swung in Atlético’s favour, with Antoine Griezmann striking the crossbar in a near go-ahead moment. Despite continued pressure, wasteful finishing—including from Lookman—and resilient goalkeeping from Raya kept Arsenal level.
A late penalty decision for Arsenal, after a challenge on Eberechi Eze, was overturned following a VAR review, denying the visitors a potential winner.
Arsenal held firm in the closing stages to extend their unbeaten run in the competition and take a valuable result back to North London. Meanwhile, Atlético Madrid will draw confidence from their performance as they prepare for the decisive second leg, having a strong record in European semi-finals.
