The planned Finalissima between Spain national football team and Argentina national football team has been cancelled after organisers could not agree on a new date and venue.
Originally scheduled for March 27 in Qatar, UEFA confirmed on Sunday that the match would no longer take place, citing the ongoing conflict in the Middle East as making the location unworkable. “It is a source of great disappointment to UEFA and the organisers that circumstances and timing have denied the teams the chance to compete for this prestigious prize in Qatar,” the governing body said.
The Finalissima, which pits the European Championship winners against the Copa America champions, was set to feature a symbolic encounter between Argentina captain Lionel Messi and rising Spanish talent Lamine Yamal.
UEFA explored alternatives including moving the match to Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, staging it over two legs in Spain and Argentina, or hosting it at another neutral European venue. All proposals were rejected by Argentina, with scheduling conflicts leaving March 31 as the only viable date. UEFA said the impasse made it impossible to stage the game, leading to the official cancellation.
The previous edition of the Finalissima was held in 2022 at Wembley Stadium, where Argentina defeated Italy national football team to win the inaugural title.
