Edo Police Warn Against Highway Blockades, Vow Immediate Arrest of Offenders

The Edo State Police Command has raised alarm over the growing practice of blocking major roads and highways under the pretext of protests, warning that such actions violate existing laws on public assembly and will no longer be condoned.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Command reaffirmed that although the Nigerian Constitution guarantees citizens the right to peaceful assembly, this right must be exercised responsibly and within the confines of the law. It stressed that actions such as mounting roadblocks, obstructing vehicular and pedestrian movement, disrupting commercial activities, or engaging in conduct capable of breaching public peace amount to criminal offences.

According to the police, these disruptions infringe on the rights of law-abiding citizens and pose a threat to safety and order. Consequently, the Command announced that effective immediately, any person or group found blocking public highways will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, FDC, issued a strong warning to organisers of protests, pressure groups, and individuals to refrain from unlawful gatherings and activities that jeopardise public order.

The Edo State Police Command reiterated its commitment to upholding the law, maintaining peace, and ensuring the safety and rights of all residents across the state.
