Edo Government Sets Up Special Committee on Museum of West African Art (MOWAA)
The Edo State Government has announced the constitution of a Special Committee to address ongoing concerns surrounding the operations and governance structure of the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA).
The move follows a series of protests and petitions from members of the public, including prominent figures from the Benin Royal Palace and the Benin Traditional Council, who have raised issues about the museum’s management and its relationship with the custodians of Benin’s cultural heritage.
According to a government statement, the decision reflects the state’s recognition of the Benin Royal Palace as the “true and lawful custodian of the cultural heritage and artifacts of the Benin Kingdom.”
The newly formed committee has been mandated to engage with international donors, partners, and trustees of MOWAA; ascertain the true legal and operational status of the institution; clarify the role and rights of the Benin Royal Palace and Traditional Institution in the project; and make recommendations to the state government for further action.
The committee’s membership is as follows:
- Sen. Adams Oshiomhole – Chairman
- Gen. Cecil Esekhaigbe (Rtd.) – Vice Chairman
- H.E. Lucky Imasuen – Member
- Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu – Member
- Roland Itoyah Otaru, SAN – Member
- Barr. Iryn Omorogiuwa – Secretary
The committee is expected to commence work immediately and submit its findings and recommendations within a short period.
Reaffirming its stance, the Edo State Government said it remains committed to safeguarding the cultural heritage of the Benin Kingdom while promoting transparency, accountability, and mutual respect in all heritage-related partnerships and initiatives.
