NPA Targets Globally Competitive Port System, Digital Transformation by 2026

The Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, has announced that the Authority is working to establish a globally competitive port system designed to enhance trade facilitation, attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), and boost investor confidence in Nigeria’s economy.

Speaking at the ongoing United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) while presenting a paper titled “Optimising Nigeria’s Port Infrastructure, Enhancing Trade Facilitation and Global Competitiveness,” Dantsoho revealed that the NPA will launch the Port Community System (PCS) by the first quarter of 2026.

He explained that the PCS would serve as a collaborative, digital platform connecting stakeholders, data, transactions, and initiatives to strengthen Nigeria’s digital footprint in port operations.

“We are building a globally competitive port system that will strengthen trade facilitation, attract FDI, and boost investor confidence in Nigeria’s economic future. We look forward to continued collaboration to achieve these goals,” he said.

Dantsoho further noted that all of Nigeria’s seaports have adopted digital platforms enabling paperless transactions, thereby reducing waste and improving efficiency. This, he added, has contributed to a 19.6% growth in non-oil exports in the first half of 2025.

Highlighting ongoing reforms, he stated that the NPA has deployed a new electronic barrier system across Lagos Port Complex terminals to improve traffic management and integrate with the “Eto Electronic Call-Up System,” developed with truck parks to ease congestion.

Other innovations include e-Tag verification, joint boarding apps, and electronic send systems, all aimed at cutting cargo dwell time and improving turnaround time in Nigerian ports.
