Deadly Strikes Escalate as Russia and Ukraine Trade Blame Over Attacks

The Kremlin-backed leader of annexed Crimea on Monday accused Ukraine of carrying out a drone strike that killed three people, while Kyiv reported Russian attacks that left three dead in the country’s southeast.

Crimean governor Sergey Aksyonov said Ukrainian forces targeted the resort town of Foros, striking the grounds of a sanatorium and a school. “According to updated data, three people were killed and 16 were wounded as a result of the UAV attack,” he wrote on Telegram. Drone fragments also sparked a fire near Yalta, he added.

Russia’s defense ministry denounced the strike as a “terrorist attack,” initially reporting two deaths.

Meanwhile, Ukraine said Russia had launched 46 air strikes across its territory by late Sunday. In Zaporizhzhia, at least three people were killed and two others injured when Russian forces dropped “at least five” bombs on the southern city, according to regional military chief Ivan Fedorov.

Crimea, annexed by Moscow in 2014, remains a flashpoint. Ukrainian forces regularly target the peninsula, including the strategic bridge linking it to Russia.

Diplomatic momentum has faltered since last month, when U.S. President Donald Trump met both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky. After those talks, Trump said Ukraine would not regain Crimea under a potential peace deal.
