National Youth Games: Team Ekiti Wins Basketball Gold, Adds to Medal Tally

Asaba, Delta State | Sept. 5, 2025 – Team Ekiti continued its impressive performance at the ongoing National Youth Games in Asaba, clinching gold in the male basketball event after a nail-biting 19–18 victory over Team Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that both sides displayed skill, composure, and determination throughout the encounter. However, Ekiti showed greater resilience in the closing minutes to secure the narrow win and claim the gold medal.

Reacting to the triumph, State Basketball Coach, Adetayo Awojinrin, expressed pride in his players’ performance.

“I am happy God crowned our efforts with success. Despite the tough matches we faced during the group stage, we managed to defeat Lagos in the final. I am proud of the team and believe this success will inspire them to win more gold medals in the future,” he said.

In other events, Funbi Adedoyin secured bronze in the Kungfu (48kg female category), with Head Coach Ronke Raji commending her determination against strong opposition.

Team Ekiti also shone in para-athletics, as Suleiman Abdulazeez clinched gold in discus and silver in shot put.

Meanwhile, three standout athletes – Suleiman Abdulazeez (para-athletics), Precious Ayodele (Ayo Olopon), and Damilola Oni (cricket) – have earned invitations from their respective national federations following their remarkable performances.

With these achievements, Team Ekiti’s medal haul now stands at two gold, three silver, and three bronze medals, firmly establishing them as one of the top-performing teams at Asaba 2025.
