The bill seeking to amend the Secret Cult and Similar Activities (Prohibition) Law has scaled its second reading at the Edo State House of Assembly.
During the debate, Majority Leader, Hon. Jonathan Ibhamawu, explained that the amendment would empower the government to prosecute not only individuals involved in cult activities but also their sponsors. He emphasized that the legislation aims to strengthen enforcement mechanisms and could reduce criminality in the state by up to 90 percent.
Supporting the bill, Hon. Adeh Isibor stressed that the fight against cultism is a collective responsibility for both the Assembly and the state government. He noted that improved security has already restored nightlife in Edo State and boosted revenue generation.
Hon. Omosele Oligbi-Edeko commended the governor for sustaining momentum in the fight against cultism, while Hon. Atu Osawuyi praised his firm commitment to security, warning that insecurity undermines social and economic development.
It will be recalled that the House recently passed the Secret Cult Law 2025 to curb cult-related activities. The governor’s swift implementation of the law has since contributed to a significant decline in cult incidents across Edo State.
