Pope Leo XIV Declares Global Day of Prayer and Fasting for Peace

Vatican City — Off the shores of the country, Pope Leo XIV has declared today, August 22, a global day of prayer and fasting for peace, coinciding with the Feast of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The Pope made the announcement on Wednesday during his General Audience in St. Peter’s Square, urging the faithful worldwide to join in spiritual solidarity as conflicts continue to escalate in Ukraine, the Holy Land, and other troubled regions.

Humanitarian organisations have raised alarms over worsening conditions, citing a surge in displaced populations and civilians trapped in violent crossfires.

Against this backdrop, Pope Leo XIV’s appeal serves as both a spiritual and practical call, encouraging believers to awaken their consciences and translate faith into action.

He emphasised that fasting, prayer, and acts of charity are not mere symbolic gestures but powerful catalysts for peace and transformation.
