In a concerning update from the international health community, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has revealed that Nigeria currently ranks as the second most affected country by cholera in West and Central Africa.
According to UNICEF Regional Director for West and Central Africa, Gilles Fagninou, the cholera outbreak in Nigeria has become endemic, raising alarms about public health and sanitation conditions.
Fagninou disclosed on Wednesday that as of the end of June, Nigeria had recorded 3,109 suspected cases and 86 deaths spanning 34 states. This grim statistic places Nigeria just behind the region’s worst-hit nation in terms of outbreak severity.
The development calls for urgent and coordinated efforts from both national authorities and international health partners to curb the spread and impact of the disease.
