BENIN CITY — Edo State Deputy Governor, Dennis Idahosa, has reiterated the commitment of Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration to the welfare of pensioners across the state.
He gave the assurance on Tuesday while receiving the executive members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Edo State Council, during a courtesy visit to his office at the Government House in Benin City.
Deputy Governor Idahosa emphasized that Governor Okpebholo remains determined to clear all outstanding gratuities. He urged the pensioners to continue supporting the present administration, noting that their backing is vital to the government’s success and the overall development of Edo State.
Speaking on behalf of the union, Comrade Samuel Okhuelegbe outlined key challenges facing pensioners, including the non-implementation of the ₦32,000 minimum pension derived from the ₦70,000 minimum wage, and unpaid gratuities. He further appealed for the clearance of outstanding pension arrears owed to some state and local government retirees.
Despite these concerns, the pensioners commended the state government for several strides, including the consistent payment of monthly pensions, the 13th-month bonus, and the inclusion of retirees in the Edo Health Insurance Scheme.
The union concluded its visit with an appeal to the government to release more funds for the settlement of gratuities at both the state and local government levels
