The high-profile treason trial of former Democratic Republic of Congo President Joseph Kabila has officially commenced at a military court in Kinshasa.
Kabila is facing a series of grave charges, including treason, murder, and rape—allegedly linked to his suspected support for the M23 rebel group, which currently controls large swaths of the mineral-rich eastern region of the country.
Despite the seriousness of the accusations, Kabila has denied all allegations, declined to appear in court, and requested to be tried in absentia.
