The governments of Benue, Nasarawa, and Plateau States have pledged to collaborate through their emergency management agencies to address growing insecurity in the region, particularly the recurring herdsmen attacks and killings.
This resolution was made during a joint press conference in Makurdi, where officials emphasized the need for collective action to restore peace.
Ben Akwash, Director-General of the Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency, stated that he and his Plateau counterpart were in Benue to commiserate with the people following the Yelewata massacre, which claimed over 200 lives. He prayed for divine protection for the displaced and urged both Benue and Nasarawa governments to strengthen security around IDP camps.
Also speaking, Sunday Abdul, Executive Secretary of the Plateau State Emergency Management Agency, strongly condemned the Yelewata killings, describing the incident as a shared tragedy that affects the entire North Central zone. He encouraged Benue residents to remain resilient and hopeful.
In his welcome remarks, Dr. James Iorpuu, Executive Secretary of the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA), decried the state’s prolonged suffering since 2011. He described the massacre as “wicked” and disclosed that about 107 victims are still undergoing treatment.
