The White House said on Tuesday, October 21, that there are currently no plans for U.S. President Donald Trump to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, despite Trump’s earlier suggestion that the two leaders would soon hold talks in Budapest to discuss ending the war in Ukraine.
Last week, Trump indicated that he expected to meet Putin “in about two weeks or so” following high-level discussions between senior American and Russian officials. He had mentioned Budapest as a possible venue for the talks, raising hopes for a potential breakthrough in peace negotiations.
A White House official, however, clarified that no such meeting is being arranged “in the immediate future.” The statement marks a notable shift from Trump’s earlier remarks, which had fueled speculation of an imminent diplomatic engagement.
The official confirmed that Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov recently held a “productive call,” but did not elaborate on whether future talks between the two presidents remain under consideration.
It remains unclear whether discussions about a potential Trump–Putin summit in Budapest are still ongoing, or if the idea has been postponed indefinitely.
