Team Edo State has continued its dominant run at the ongoing second edition of the Niger Delta Games, amassing an impressive 50 gold, 30 silver and 22 bronze medals.
The team’s remarkable medal haul cuts across multiple sporting events, with athletes pushing their limits to solidify Edo’s commanding position at the top of the medal table.
A major highlight of the competition has been swimming, where Edo athletes ended a 24-year medal drought with a string of outstanding podium finishes. Peremobere Joy clinched gold in the Women’s 200m Individual Medley, while Lucky Ayeni secured gold in the 50m Breaststroke.
Akintola Albert also delivered a strong performance, winning gold in the Men’s 100m Butterfly, while Funmilayo Demehin added to the tally with a silver medal in the Women’s 100m Butterfly.
More medals came through Mien-Ebi Mokuomor, who won silver in the Men’s 200m Freestyle, Tissa Precious, who claimed silver in the Men’s 100m Freestyle, and Nkonye Chukunedum, who bagged silver in the Women’s 50m Backstroke.
The state’s impressive showing has been widely attributed to the strategic leadership of the Edo State Sports Commission under Chairman Destiny Enabulele, whose commitment to talent development and unity among athletes has continued to yield results.
From the opening day of the Games, Edo athletes have thrilled spectators with performances marked by skill, strength and determination, reinforcing the state’s status as a powerhouse in regional sports.
