South African MP Fires Shots During Violent Gang Attack in Cape Town

A violent ambush in Cape Town left a South African Member of Parliament, Ian Cameron, and two colleagues injured after their vehicle came under attack by a gang in the township of Philippi on Tuesday.

Cameron, along with fellow parliamentary police committee members Lisa Schickerling and Nicholas Gotsell, was returning from a work trip when assailants pelted their car with bricks, shattering the windows. Both Cameron and Gotsell sustained injuries, with Cameron suffering broken teeth.

In response, Cameron drew his firearm and shot at the attackers, wounding one of them. Police confirmed that two suspects, aged 16 and 18, have since been arrested on charges of attempted murder and attempted hijacking.

Authorities revealed that one suspect was apprehended while receiving treatment at a hospital, while another was captured on a farm early Wednesday. A third suspect remains at large as police continue their search.

South Africa continues to grapple with high levels of violent crime, ranking among the countries with the highest murder rates globally.
