Shettima Represents Nigeria at UNGA 80, to Deliver National Statement and Push Global Tax Reforms

Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in New York for the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which kicks off Monday and runs through September 28.

Shettima, standing in for President Bola Tinubu, will deliver Nigeria’s national statement during the high-level general debate. He is also expected to unveil the country’s updated Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement, while participating in side events, bilateral meetings, and roundtable discussions.

Originally, Tinubu was slated to address the Assembly on the second day of the general debate, around 8:30 p.m. local time (2:30 p.m. Nigerian time), as the 17th world leader on the list of speakers.

On arrival at John F. Kennedy International Airport, Shettima was received by top Nigerian officials, including Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Defence Badaru Abubakar, and Nigeria’s Chargé d’Affaires to the UN, Amb. Samson Itegboje. Others present included Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology Uche Nnaji, Defence Attaché in New York Brig.-Gen. Edward Koleoso, and Defence Attaché in Washington Group Capt. Sani Kalgo.

Speaking on Nigeria’s priorities at UNGA 80, Tuggar emphasized the push for a UN Global Convention on Taxation and Africa’s representation on the UN Security Council, stressing Nigeria’s leadership role in advancing the Ezulwini Consensus and Sirte Declaration, which call for at least two permanent seats for Africa.

Nigeria will also highlight its contributions to peacekeeping and reaffirm its stance on global conflicts, including crises in Gaza, Eastern Congo, and Sudan.

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State noted that Nigeria’s participation would further enhance its global image as an investment destination, with focus areas including solid minerals, agriculture, and skills-based education.

Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment Dr. Olajumoke Oduwole added that Nigeria would use the platform to showcase its Renewed Hope Agenda and economic reforms. “On Monday, we are hosting Nigeria Investment Day, highlighting solid minerals, telecommunications, and technology,” she said.

Beyond the debates, Shettima will also take part in the African Union Peace and Security Council meeting and hold talks with the Prime Minister of Sudan, among other high-level engagements.
