Retired Police Officers Plan Nationwide Protest Over Poor Pensions

The Nigerian Union of Retired Police Officers has formally notified the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, of a planned nationwide protest over inadequate retirement benefits.

Chairman of the union, Mannir Lawal, disclosed this during an interview with journalists on Wednesday. He stated that members of the union from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will converge in Abuja on July 21 for what he described as “the mother of all peaceful protests.”

According to Lawal, the protest will begin with a picketing of the National Assembly complex, followed by a march to the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The union is demanding to be removed from the contributory pension scheme, which Lawal labeled as fraudulent and exploitative.
