Power Commissioners Reject Senate’s Proposed Amendment to Electricity Act 2025

The Forum of Commissioners of Power and Energy in Nigeria (FOCPEN) has vehemently opposed the Senate’s proposed amendment to the Electricity Act 2025.

In a joint statement released to the press in Makurdi, Benue State, FOCPEN Chairman Eka Williams and Secretary Omale Omale expressed deep concern over the ongoing deliberations in the Senate.

Williams, who serves as the Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy in Cross River State, and Omale, his counterpart from Benue State, described the move as surprising and ill-timed. They questioned the rationale behind attempting to amend a law that was enacted less than two years ago and has already been adopted by over 16 states.

The commissioners warned that such amendments could disrupt the progress made so far in reforming the power sector, which plays a vital role in supporting key industries such as banking, security, healthcare, and education.
