The Edo State Police Command has arrested a 42-year-old commercial bus driver, Osabuohien Ogieva, for allegedly killing his girlfriend, Joy Jerome, and dumping her body near Ikpe River in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of the state.
According to reports, the incident followed a disagreement between the couple, during which the suspect allegedly struck the victim with a stick. When she became unresponsive, he reportedly rushed her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
A source told journalists that the suspect subsequently transported the corpse to an unknown location before it was later discovered near the Ikpe River.
Confirming the incident, the Edo State Police Command’s spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased, a resident of the Upper Sakponba area of Benin City, was in a romantic relationship with the suspect.
She disclosed that Ogieva was later traced and arrested at his hideout, where he allegedly confessed to having a misunderstanding with the deceased on January 9, 2026, while conveying her in his bus. He also reportedly admitted to abandoning her body near the Ikpe River along the Benin–Abraka Highway.
ASP Ikoedem added that the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
