The Chairman of Oredo Local Government Council, Hon. Gabriel Iduseri, has successfully restored calm between traders and the Oredo Local Government Taskforce following a recent clash at Etebite Street, off Forestry Road, Benin City.
The incident, which occurred on January 14, erupted when taskforce operatives, accompanied by a cameraman, were reportedly attacked while carrying out a routine enforcement exercise to remove traders displaying goods on the walkway. The confrontation temporarily disrupted commercial activities in the area and raised concerns about public safety.
In a bid to prevent further escalation, Hon. Iduseri promptly intervened by convening a peace meeting that brought together representatives of the affected traders, taskforce officials, and other key stakeholders.
Addressing the meeting, the council chairman reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive governance, peaceful conflict resolution, and the promotion of a safe and conducive business environment across Oredo Local Government Area. He assured traders of ongoing dialogue and fair enforcement of regulations, while urging taskforce operatives to discharge their duties with professionalism and respect for human dignity.
In their response, the traders expressed gratitude to the chairman for what they described as a timely and productive intervention. They commended his leadership and dedication to peace, while pledging their support for the policies of the local government and their commitment to maintaining order and cooperation.
