NOA Warns Riverine Communities in Kebbi to Relocate Ahead of Dam Water Release

The National Orientation Agency (NOA), Kebbi State Directorate, has issued a strong warning to communities living along the banks of River Goronyo and River Niger, urging them to relocate immediately as water will soon be released from nearby dams.

According to the agency, the measure is necessary to safeguard the structural safety of the dams and avert possible flooding.

In a statement issued in Birnin Kebbi by the Assistant Director and Head of Media and Communication, Larai Nazo, the NOA explained that the controlled release of water is a proactive step to protect the dams’ integrity.

The statement, however, cautioned that the release would likely trigger a significant rise in river levels, posing a serious risk to low-lying communities.

The Kebbi State NOA Directorate further disclosed that it is working closely with emergency management agencies and river basin authorities to ensure the warning reaches all potentially affected communities and to provide support where necessary.
