Nigeria Ranks 142nd in Transparency International’s 2025 Corruption Index

Nigeria has been ranked 142nd out of 182 countries in Transparency International’s 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), retaining its score of 26 from 2024.

The index, which assesses perceived levels of public sector corruption on a scale of 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean), indicates limited progress in Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts. Despite maintaining the same score, the country dropped two places from its 140th position recorded last year.

Nigeria’s performance remains well below the global average score of 42 in 2025, down slightly from 43 in 2024. The report also revealed that more than two-thirds of countries assessed scored below 50, highlighting widespread global challenges in combating corruption.

Within Africa, Nigeria trails 33 countries, including top-performing nations such as Seychelles (68), Cabo Verde (62), Botswana (58) and Rwanda (58). Other African countries ranked above Nigeria include Mauritius, Namibia, Senegal, Ghana, South Africa, Tanzania, Morocco, Tunisia, Kenya and Egypt.

Transparency International noted that the results underscore ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s fight against corruption and stressed the need for stronger governance frameworks, accountability mechanisms and sustained reforms to improve the country’s global standing.
