The Nigeria Police Council on Monday unanimously approved the appointment of Olatunji Disu as the 23rd Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
The meeting, presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was held at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja, and lasted less than 30 minutes before members endorsed Disu’s confirmation.
The approval aligns with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, which mandates the Council to consider and advise on the appointment of an Inspector-General of Police by the President.
Chaired by the President, the Council comprises the 36 state governors, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, and the Inspector-General of Police. It serves as a key advisory body on policing policy, administration, and senior appointments.
Monday’s session followed the resignation of former IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, last week. The Presidency had earlier indicated that the Council would convene to formally consider Disu’s appointment after Egbetokun’s exit.
Among those present at the meeting were Vice President Kashim Shettima; Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume; National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu; and Head of the Civil Service of the Federation Didi Walson-Jack.
Also in attendance were AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Governor of Kwara State; Babajide Sanwo-Olu; Dapo Abiodun; Abdullahi Sule; Caleb Mutfwang; Lucky Aiyedatiwa; and Peter Mbah, alongside deputy governors of Kogi and Delta states and relevant ministers.
Disu, 59, had been serving in an acting capacity since last Wednesday. At his decoration ceremony, President Tinubu charged him to reposition the Nigeria Police Force at what he described as a critical time in the nation’s history.
“Today, we hand you the responsibility of leading the Nigeria Police Force at a critical time in our nation’s journey. You must lead with integrity, prioritise the welfare of your officers, and work tirelessly to restore confidence in the police as a force for good,” the President said.
A native of Lagos Island, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992. He holds a bachelor’s degree in English Education from Lagos State University and master’s degrees in Public Administration and in Criminology, Security and Legal Psychology.
