The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has issued a strong advisory to Nigerians travelling to the United States, urging strict compliance with visa regulations to avoid deportation or future entry bans.
In a statement released Thursday and signed by the NIS spokesperson, AS Akinlabi, the agency emphasised growing concerns from U.S. immigration authorities regarding the misuse of visas by Nigerian travellers, particularly among students and tourists.
“Security screening by U.S. authorities continues beyond initial entry,” the statement read. “Breach of visa conditions, including overstaying, may attract severe penalties, including removal from the U.S. and permanent ineligibility for future travel.”
The NIS specifically cautioned Nigerian students in the U.S. to remain enrolled and active in their academic programmes. Any withdrawal, long-term absence, or course changes without proper notification, the agency warned, could lead to immediate visa cancellation.
Regarding tourism, the service noted that U.S. consular officials have grown increasingly vigilant, especially in cases where the primary motive for travel appears to be childbirth to obtain U.S. citizenship for the child. Such intentions, the NIS warned, may lead to visa denial.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the U.S. Mission in Nigeria to ensure responsible travel practices and prevent potential policy changes that could negatively affect Nigerian passport holders.
Travellers were advised to stay informed and ensure full compliance with all immigration laws of their destination country.
“The responsibility of safeguarding your travel status lies with you,” the NIS concluded.
