Nigeria, Benin Republic Sign MoU to Boost Security and Trade in Border Communities

Nigeria and the Benin Republic have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening security and driving economic growth in border towns shared by the two nations.

The agreement was formalized during a ceremony in Cotonou, Benin Republic, with both countries reaffirming their commitment to tackling cross-border insecurity, enhancing cooperation, and reviving the socio-cultural ties disrupted by colonial partitioning.

Speaking at the event, Chairman of Yewa North Local Government Area, Olusola Akinbode, who represented chairmen of all border local governments, stressed the importance of cross-border collaboration for peace and prosperity.

He noted that communities such as Seme, Igbokofi, Tobolo, Ilara, and Ipokia in Nigeria, alongside Cotonou in Benin, are expected to witness improved safety, stronger business activity, and increased employment opportunities as a result of the initiative.

According to Akinbode, residents and business leaders in the affected areas have expressed optimism that the partnership will not only curb criminal activities but also open new channels for trade and development.

The signing of the MoU follows a recent meeting in Parakou, Benin Republic, between local government chairmen from Nigeria and mayors of communities along the Nigeria-Benin international boundary.
