The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has apprehended a 60-year-old drug kingpin who had been evading arrest for six years.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the fugitive was arrested on July 13 at his hideout in the Isheri area of Lagos. He was allegedly preparing to distribute large quantities of cocaine and methamphetamine to the South-East region and other parts of Nigeria.
Babafemi disclosed that the arrest followed the interception of some of the suspect’s illicit drug consignments earlier that day at Ilasamaja, along the Apapa-Oshodi expressway.
Acting on credible intelligence, NDLEA operatives had initially arrested one of the suspect’s couriers en route to Onitsha, Anambra State, in a white Toyota Sienna. A search of the vehicle, assisted by sniffer dogs, revealed 7.6 kilograms of cocaine and 900 grams of methamphetamine concealed in hidden compartments.
The successful follow-up operation led officers to the kingpin’s hideout, where he was finally apprehended, ending a manhunt that began in 2019.
