Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has condemned the recent attack on members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the incident as an internal party crisis that escalated beyond acceptable limits.
In a statement personally issued on Tuesday night, the governor expressed sympathy with the affected party members, lamenting that certain elements allegedly took advantage of the peaceful atmosphere in Edo State to foment violence.
“As peace-loving people, the importation of thugs and miscreants from outside the state under the guise of party politics remains totally condemned and will not be tolerated going forward,” the governor stated.Okpebholo stressed that as the Chief Security Officer of the state, he would not allow political rivalry to degenerate into unrest.
“Even though the precise motive behind this attack may not yet be fully known, I strongly believe that the ultimate objective is to discredit Edo State and undermine its reputation as one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria,” he said.
The governor maintained that political blackmail would not sway the people of Edo from supporting an administration they believe in. He emphasized that politics should revolve around performance, meaningful engagement, and consistently earning the trust and confidence of the electorate.
“This is what we are known for, and we will remain committed to that path,” he added.Okpebholo argued that any attempt to orchestrate violence for political gain reflects a lack of substantive value to offer the electorate. He noted that as a dominant political force in the state, his party welcomes constructive opposition but would not be intimidated by what he described as blackmail or self-inflicted crises.
While sympathising with ADC members, he advised the party to resolve what appeared to be internal disagreements rather than directing accusations externally. The governor appealed to residents to remain calm and continue upholding the peace for which Edo State is known.
“Edo remains a peaceful state, and no one can take that away from us,” he affirmed.
He also warned political actors against fomenting unrest under the guise of party activities, insisting that parties must settle internal disputes before organising public events.
Okpebholo further directed the police and other security agencies to stay vigilant and closely monitor political gatherings to prevent any escalation of violence, reiterating his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
