Lagos Reintroduces Monthly Environmental Sanitation Without Movement Restriction

The Lagos State Government has reintroduced the monthly environmental sanitation exercise as part of efforts to promote a cleaner and healthier environment across the state.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced that the exercise will commence on Saturday, April 25, 2026, and will be observed on the last Saturday of every month between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.

The sanitation programme, which was suspended in 2016 following a court ruling that nullified compulsory movement restrictions, will now operate without restricting residents’ movement.

Speaking during a sensitisation campaign organised by the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resourcesalong the Mushin–Agege Motor Road corridor, the governor urged residents to take responsibility for maintaining a clean environment.

He described the initiative as a renewed effort to revive environmental consciousness through voluntary participation and community action.

“A clean city is not achieved by government alone. It is built by the daily actions of the people who live in it,” Sanwo-Olu said, warning that indiscriminate waste disposal contributes to flooding, environmental degradation and public health risks.

The governor recalled that the sanitation exercise was once a nationwide routine but noted that while enforcement mechanisms have changed, the responsibility to keep the environment clean remains.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, assured residents that the initiative would be backed by enforcement and active participation from relevant agencies.

These include the Lagos Waste Management Authority, Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, and the Kick Against Indiscipline.

Wahab warned against environmental violations such as illegal waste disposal, open defecation, indiscriminate crossing of highways, burning of refuse and trading in unauthorised locations.

He added that the Lagos State Environmental Protection Law 2017 remains in force, stressing that offenders will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
