Kayode Egbetokun Resigns as IGP, Presidency Confirms

The Presidency on Tuesday confirmed that Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has resigned from office.

Egbetokun, whose tenure was extended by one year in 2025 by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, reportedly submitted his resignation letter earlier in the day, citing personal family reasons for his decision.

Presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development to journalists following enquiries.

“Egbetokun resigned today. He was not sacked. A statement will be issued later,” Onanuga said.

Controversies Trail Tenure

Egbetokun’s time as Inspector-General was marked by public debate, particularly over the extension of his tenure beyond the statutory retirement provisions of 60 years of age or 35 years in service.

The extension drew criticism from civil society groups, legal experts and commentators, who argued that it contravened established police service rules and weakened institutional discipline.

Another controversy during his leadership involved allegations surrounding the promotion of Bukola Kuti to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police. Critics claimed her perceived closeness to the former IGP gave her undue advantage, fuelling accusations of favouritism within the Nigeria Police Force. Police authorities, however, denied the claims.

Further details regarding the leadership transition at the Nigeria Police Force are expected in an official statement from the Presidency.
