Governor Okpebholo Approves Refund of Over ₦17 Million Uniform Debt Owed by Previous Administration

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved the payment of more than ₦17 million owed to executive principals of senior secondary schools in the state. The debt was incurred by the previous administration over unpaid uniform fees.

The decision followed an appeal by a committee of executive principals from selected government schools, who visited the Senior Secondary Education Board (SSEB) to seek a refund of the outstanding sum.

The committee, led by the Executive Principal of Egor Senior Secondary School, Onaifo Osemwengie, explained that the debt arose when a former consultant to the Ministry of Education, Chinelo Ezeobi, set up a uniform committee on the directive of the then Commissioner for Education, Dr. Joan Oviawe. Although the committee was later dissolved, over ₦17 million remained unpaid to the principals.

Executive Chairman of SSEB, Dr. Maureen Ekhoragbon, expressed gratitude to Governor Okpebholo for approving the refund. She commended the governor’s commitment to excellence, transparency, and accountability in governance.

The principals also appreciated the SSEB Chairman for her support and for presenting their concerns to the governor, which led to the approval.
