Gov. Okpebholo Personally Rescues Over 10 Victims in Benin–Auchi Highway Accident

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on Saturday, August 30, 2025, demonstrated decisive leadership and empathy when he intervened at the scene of a fatal road traffic accident along the Benin–Auchi highway.

The governor, who was traveling with his convoy to Irrua, Esan Central Local Government Area, encountered a major gridlock shortly after the bypass and promptly disembarked to ascertain the cause. On arrival, he met several victims in critical condition, many of them bleeding heavily, while passersby reportedly resorted to filming the incident rather than rendering aid.

In response, Governor Okpebholo directed that two of his security Hilux vehicles be repurposed as emergency transport carriers. He personally oversaw the evacuation of the injured, including a woman with severe trauma, and ensured that they were conveyed to a medical facility under police escort for urgent treatment.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the accident was triggered by a white Toyota Venza, with registration number ABUJA GWA 50 AW, which allegedly drove against traffic. The reckless maneuver resulted in a collision involving the Venza and three fully loaded commercial minibuses, leaving numerous passengers injured and causing a prolonged traffic obstruction.

The governor remained at the accident scene until confirmation was received that all victims had been transported to hospital care, after which he resumed his journey. His swift intervention elicited commendations from motorists and residents, who described his action as evidence of a humane
